Plot Summary[]

The issue opens with Carol Danvers and Steve Rogers (Captain America) fighting Absorbing Man by the Museum of Natural History in New York. After handily defeating the rather sexist Absorbing Man, Captain America is asked by a reporter who his new ally is (this being the debut of her new costume). This leads to a discussion between Carol and Cap over whether Carol should change her super-hero name from 'Ms. Marvel' to 'Captain Marvel'. After some back and forth between Captain America, Carol, and Peter Parker, Carol flies to the edge of space, and decides to take the new name.

Later, Carol visits her friend Burke, who alerts Carol to the fact that one of her heroes, Helen Cobb died in a fire. The narration then flashbacks to years ago in Texas, when Carol first met Helen Cobb. It's at this point that Helen Cobb's letter to Carol appears over the story. Coming back to the present day, Carol is at the funeral for Helen, and then flies to space to realease her ashes above the atmosphere.

Helen's Letter to Carol[]

Knew you the second you set foot on my property, kid. Even young as you were, how could I not?

Folks want to blame someone for gals like us. "Her daddy was unkind" or "some fella broker her heart"... Hogwash.

You and me've always been like this. Always a little removed. Always... --dreaming.

Of higher, further, faster... more. Always more.

We came into the world spittin' mad, running full bore... To or from what I ain't never been able to tell.

Over the years, I've come to think of these particular traits as the shared attributes of a chosen people... the Lord put us here to punch holes in the sky.

And when a soul is born with that kind of purpose... It'll damn sure find a way.

We're gonna get where we're going, you and me. Death and indignity be damned...

And we will be the stars we were always meant to be.

Solicitation[]

SHE'S BACK! The "Mightiest" of Earth's Mightiest Heroes! - Ace pilot. Legendary Avenger. 100% pure bad-a$$. - Carol Danvers has a new name, a new mission ...and all the power she needs to make her life a living hell. - Guest starring Captain America.

Notes[]

  • This is the first issue of the Carol's ongoing adventures of Captain Marvel, but the new Captain Marvel costume actually made its debut in Avenging Spider-Man no. 9
  • Various parts of Helen's letter to Carol became trademark quotes for this series, including "Higher, Further, Faster, More" and "We will be the stars we were always meant to be."
  • "Higher, Further, Faster" even became the tagline on some of the 2019 Captain Marvel film posters
